Tauroctony (single)

about

The Tauroctony is a series of reliefs at the cornerstone of the Mithraic Mysteries of the Roman Empire. The reliefs depict the God Mithras killing a bull, with many other symbols, celestial and otherwise present. The interpretation of the image and it's symbols is highly contested and unclear, but what seems most agreed upon is that it represents a salvific act - the killing of the bull and subsequent feast could be tied to the salvation of humanity. Some have drawn parallels to the similar Zoroastrian story of the killing of the primordial Gavaevodata. Personally, I see it as a representation of life being born from death, of sustenance being derived from sacrifice. It seemed fitting to release this in Taurus season.
