Inspired by traditional gagaku (雅楽) and Noh theatre, as well as the music of Kabuki theatre, this album explores themes inspired by some of the Yōkai of Japanese folklore. Primarily through the use of the yo musical scale, as well as instruments like the shamisen, yuegin, koto, shakuhachi, taiko, and tuned gongs, these seven tracks seek to evoke a sense of Eastern-inspired horror.

As a Japanophile, many things inspired me to want to try my hand at Japanese synth (or kabuki ambient, as I've seen it sometimes called), but it would be remiss of me not to credit artists like Shogun's Castle, Gates of Morheim, Kurotokage, and Goryō for providing a study of what Japanese synth could be.

Rather than describe these yokai myself, I encourage any listener curious about these entities to look up the rich history either through a cursory Wikipedia search, or by checking out the plethora of riveting and well-researched Youtube series covering the history of these stories.
